Phantom Fall Candle

To celebrate the time of year where cool darkness reigns, the Phantom Fall candle will summon an enchanting glimpse of warmth and light. The fall and winter months invite us to cherish the changing seasons, reap the harvest, and dwell in the obscurity. This season is for minimalism, reflection, and hope for a new year. What better way to honor the fire festival, Samhain, then to create your own burning candle.

In this time, we also reminded of the fact that we are not separate from, but a part of, nature. But it is not enough to honor and celebrate nature; we must also preserve it. In this vein, we aim to be mindful of our actions and take steps to be more environmentally sustainable. So, after enjoying the hauntingly delicious Phantom wines, extend the product’s life cycle by creating a one-of-a-kind candle. And then like the Phantom, we’ll leave no trace…

SUPPLIES

  • Phantom wine bottle, empty and dry
  • Glass cutter
  • Ice water
  • Candle or lighter
  • Coarse sandpaper
  • Double boiler (large pot and glass mixing bowl or candle pourer)
  • Wooden skewers, large crafting popsicle sticks, or chopsticks
  • Clothes pins
  • Soy wax flakes or beads
  • Cotton or wooden wicks with base

INSTRUCTIONS

Wine Bottle Candle Holder

Step 1. Score wine bottle according to instructions on your device.

Step 2. Heat scored line with a controlled flame, like a candle stick or lighter.

Step 3. Dunk wine bottle, neck first, into ice bath.

Step 4. You will hear a “pop” and the bottle with break apart at the score mark.

  • TIP: If you don’t get the “pop” effect right away, DO NOT try to break the bottle apart. Try the heating method again followed by the ice bath until you get results. Or, check to make sure your scoring worked properly.

Step 5. Sand edges down with sandpaper.

Step 6. Fill large pot or saucepan with water (around half full) and place on stove or hotplate.

Step 7. Place measured soy wax flakes or beads into a smaller pot, glass bowl, or pourer.

Step 8. To measure the amount of wax you need, double the volume of your container by pouring the dry wax into your cut wine bottle candle holder twice.

Step 9. Fix your smaller pot, glass bowl, or pourer in the larger one to create a double boiler.

Step 10. Turn heat to medium, stirring occasionally as to not let the wax burn.

Step 11. Allow the wax to completely melt before adding optional fragrance – essential oils, candle fragrance oil, or dried herbs.

Step 12. While the wax is heating, fix the metal base of the wick to the bottom center of the cut bottle, and use the skewers and clothes pins to keep the wick upright in the center.

Step 13. Carefully pour wax into the wine bottle and let cool and solidify.

Step 14. Cut wick down to ¼ to ½ inch above the wax.

Step 15. Let candle wax cure for at least 24 hours before lighting.

Don’t forget to enjoy a glass of the hauntingly delicious wine as you craft this season!

Happy haunting!
