Slow Cooker Ginger Sesame Chicken With Rice & Steamed Broccoli


  • 8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 T. sesame oil
  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 T. brown sugar
  • 3 T. orange juice
  • 6 tsp. hoisin sauce
  • 1 T. fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tsp. fresh garlic, chopped
  • 1 T. cornstarch
  • 2 tsp. sesame seeds, toasted
  • 2 T. sliced green onions, optional.
  • 1 cup white rice
  • 2 cups broccoli florets

Cooking Instructions:

  • In a large nonstick skillet, heat the sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Carefully place the chicken in a slow cooker.
  • In a mixing bowl combine the soy, sugar, oj, hoisin, ginger and garlic, mixing well. Pour over the chicken in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 3 hours, or until chicken is tender.
  • One hour before ready to serve, make your rice according to the package directions. We also like to use brown rice or green bamboo rice, for fun and extra flavor.
  • Remove the chicken to a platter and keep warm. Carefully pour the cooking liquid through a fine sieve into a small saucepan to remove the solids, discarding them. Bring the cooking liquid to a boil over medium-high heat. Combine the cornstarch with 1 T. cold water and add to the pan, whisking until blended. Cook at a low boil for a minute or so until sauce starts to thicken, stirring constantly.
  • Just before serving, steam your broccoli in a veggie steamer or on the stovetop, until just al dente.
  • To platter: place ½ cup rice in a shallow bowl, topped with two chicken thighs and a ½ cup of broccoli. Pour 2 T. of sauce over the top and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Don’t put that slow cooker away just yet. With our days getting busier and our nights staying cold, this dish is an easy weeknight dinner that will please the whole family! (Serves 4)
