Say “Kia Ora” to Our New Killer White

Juggernaut Wines is proud to introduce our very first imported wine, our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc!

As the Juggernaut range has grown, our family continues to seek out the most challenging and unique growing conditions for our bold and uncompromising wines. After starting with hillsides Cabernet Sauvignon in Alexander Valley and the Sierra Foothills, then the complex Russian River Pinot Noir, and last year adding the cool climate Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, this year we traveled all the way to New Zealand to find vineyards in the Wairau Valley. Located along the northern coast of the southern island, these vines are buffeted by high winds that temper the southern hemisphere’s intense sunshine and create remarkably concentrated wine grapes.

Winemaker Eric Aafedt traveled to New Zealand shortly after the harvest season in April of 2023 (in the southern hemisphere, their seasons are opposite ours!) to find a family to partner with for our Juggernaut. With 600 years of working the land and their Maori heritage, the MacDonald family’s values matched so many of our own, including a commitment to quality and sustainability. And their grapes showed the spectacular results that come from true grit and determination in overcoming nature’s challenges.

“As a winemaker, it has been especially exciting to expand our portfolio for Juggernaut beyond California and tap into the world-renowned Marlborough region,” said Eric. “Expanding our horizons to New Zealand was a welcomed challenge that goes perfectly with the Juggernaut ethos that overcoming challenges builds character.”

Eric traveled to New Zealand again just before bottling to put the finishing touches on the wine, which was fermented in 100% stainless steel tanks. With the perfect balance of Kiwi and Bogle characteristics, this wine is vibrant and bright. Audacious aromas of fresh grass and gooseberry are followed by flavors of zesty grapefruit, lemon, and passionfruit.  It’s a crisp and lively “sauvie b” as the Kiwis say!

Killer whales are known to be fiercely intelligent, developing strategies to master their environment, and often work as a group to achieve their goals. Our Sauvignon Blanc’s intensity and coastal New Zealand origin made these intelligent hunters the perfect alpha predator for our newest wine release.
