Enter HereIt’s been an unusually unsettling weather year so far here in Northern California. After high winds and torrential rains in early January, things settled down enough for us to get out into the vineyards for pruning. But March has come in like our Juggernaut lion…an unstoppable force of high winds, more precipitation, and bone-chillingly cold temperatures. We even had some slushy snowflakes hit our vines in Clarksburg! And there’s more to come…
As always, farmers remain at the mercy of Mother Nature. But until budbreak later this spring, we are happy to sit back and wait for the growing season to begin!
Cheers,
Warren, Jody, and Ryan Bogle
As the yearly wine competition circuit kicks off, we are proud to announce that twelve (12!) of our wines have been named award winners at the 2023 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition! Known as the largest competition of North American wines, we are truly honored to have so many of our wines named as winners.
“The fact that twelve of our wines have garnered awards really showcases our commitment to quality,” says Eric Aafedt, Vice President of Winemaking. “After 29 years here at Bogle, we continue to strive with each vineyard, each barrel and each bottle to produce the absolute best wine we can.”
The 52 judges at the competition agreed.
Four wines, our Bogle Reserve Chardonnay, Bogle Family Vineyards Chardonnay, Bogle Family Vineyards Petite Sirah and Bogle Petite Sirah Port were all named BEST OF CLASS winners.
“These are the best of the best wines within each category of the competition,” says Bob Fraser, Executive Director of the competition. “To be selected as a BOC wine from over 5,500 wines submitted is truly an honor for these wineries.”
Our Bogle Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon took home a DOUBLE GOLD medal this year. At just $10 a bottle, we are proud that our wine took home a medal typically earned by wines at two or three times the price.
Even more wines were awarded the GOLD: Bogle Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Chenin Blanc, Essential Red, Bogle Reverence, Reserve Old Vine Zinfandel, and Juggernaut hillside Cabernet Sauvignon.
For those who want to taste the winners, we have a special offer. Our Winner’s Case includes one bottle of each of the award winners, with the exception of 2 bottles of our DOUBLE GOLD winning Cabernet Sauvignon. (The Reserve Old Vine Zinfandel has sold out.)
This case is available for pick up at our Wine Shop in Clarksburg, or for a limited time, can be ordered for delivery for just $5 shipping.
Success often starts with something else. For us, it was a failed crop of potatoes. For the Sciabica family of Modesto, California, it was watermelons.
Nicola Sciabica (sha-bee-ka) immigrated to the United States from Marsala, Sicily as a young man and found himself in unfamiliar territory: the cold of Connecticut. After years of searching for a Mediterranean climate, he discovered a place that felt like home. On a trip to Modesto, California to purchase watermelons, Nicola fell in love with the quality of the water in Modesto. A short time later he purchased a small ranch and moved his family to the area. From there, it was an easy choice to follow his roots back into the ancient art of olive oil production.
In 1936, Nicola began cold-pressing olive oil in Modesto, California, which today is the undisputed oldest continuously produced olive oil in California. Today, the Sciabicas still reside, farm, and cold-press olive oil on the same property.
Through the years, the efforts of 5 generations of Sciabicas have made their olive oil unmatched in quality and flavor. The family says, “We’re going to make the best olive oil or none at all.”
The family pioneered “single varietal” olive oils, keeping individual olive types separate, much like the different varietals of wine. The family again blazed a new path with cold-press ‘Agrumato-Style’ Flavored Olive Oils, in which fresh fruit, herbs, or peppers are pressed together with just-harvested olives to craft delicious and award-winning olive oils.
Today, Nicola’s grandsons Nick and Daniel, his great-grandson Jonathan, and his great-great-grandsons Nicholas and Andrew, carry on the family tradition. As the fourth generation to work in the family business, CEO Jonathan feels proud to continue the tradition, while looking forward to what the future might bring.
“We are committed to offering unique and exciting new products that live up to the quality and consistency that people have come to expect from the Sciabica Family,” says Jonathan. But Jonathan is just as proud of his commitment to Sciabica’s customers as he is to the products, saying, “We’re not actually in the olive oil business, we’re in the customer happiness business.”
Here at Bogle, we have long believed in some of the very same values: quality, consistency, and a commitment to our customers. And as a generational family business in Northern California, there are so many similarities between the Bogles and the Sciabicas. Because of this, we are honored to have offered Sciabica Family products in our Wine Shop for nearly a decade. From their olive oils and vinegars, to their skincare and gift packs, take a look the next time you are visiting the Wine Shop at Bogle.
