Wine Bottle Succulent Planter

At Bogle Family Vineyards, we take sustainability seriously, but after you buy the bottle, the ball is in your court. While we always hope you will recycle your bottle after enjoyment, finding ways to reuse the bottle is an even better use of resources! Turning your wine bottle into a beautiful succulent planter is one of our favorites!

SUPPLIES

  • Wine Bottle
  • Glass cutter
  • Water (hot water and ice water)
  • Candle or lighter (optional)
  • Coarse sand paper
  • Well-draining potting soil
  • Succulent

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1. Score wine bottle according to instructions on your device.

Step 2. Heat scored line with boiling water.

  •  TIP: You can heat the scored line with any controlled heat source, such as a flame.

Step 3. Dunk wine bottle into ice bath.

  • You will hear a “pop” and the bottle with break apart at the score mark.
    • TIP: If you don’t get the “pop” effect right away, DO NOT try to break the bottle apart. Try the heating method again followed by the ice bath until you get results. Or, check to make sure your scoring worked properly.

Step 4. Sand edges down with sand paper.

Step 5. Add your well-draining succulent potting soil and plant your succulent!

  • TIPS:
    • Add activated charcoal, which has antimicrobial properties and will help absorb excess water.
    • For proper watering, measure your succulent holder’s volume and make a note of it – using a pre-measured water amount will help avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

Now pour yourself a glass and find the perfect windowsill for your new wine bottle succulent planter. Or if you’re like us, you’ll get hooked and make a handful more for friends and family!

Cheers!
